A new Game of Thrones spin-off focusing on Aegon’s Conquest is in the works with writer Mattson Tomlin, most recently known for his work on The Batman and its upcoming sequel.
According The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has taken a step forward on the long-discussed Aegon’s Conquest project by teaming up with Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman – Part II with director Matt Reeves. He will craft a story about Aegon I Targaryen and his “bloody and brutal conquest” of the continent of Westeros.
As book readers will know, Aegon I Targaryen is easily one of the most influential Targaryens before Daenerys’ era of Game of Thrones. He conquered six of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros (with Dorne being the only one that resisted) and became the first king of the Iron Throne, ruling with his sisters and wives Visenya and Rhaenys.
Given the historical significance of this particular event and the general interest surrounding the silver-haired family, HBO has floated the idea of an Aegon’s Conquest project for some time, with a report last April indicating that the prequel was in the works. the early stages of development as part of the chain’s franchise building plans.
House of the Dragon was a hugely successful sequel to Game of Thrones, achieving the biggest premiere in the premium cable network’s history. The second season of the acclaimed fantasy series will be released this summer (possibly in August), continuing the adaptation of George RR Martin’s Fire and Blood.
However, several Game of Thrones prequel and spin-off plans have fallen apart in the past. Martin revealed in January of last year that HBO had shelved some projects, but did not reveal which of those in discussion were on the back burner, only that the Hedge Knight series is still moving forward and will go into production this year.
