McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, musician and son of actor Gary Sinise, died Jan. 5 after a battle with a rare spinal cancer called chordoma. He was 33 years old.
He CSI: New York The actor shared the news of his son’s death on his Instagram and his foundation website Tuesday, where he wrote a heartfelt tribute to him.
“Album week (Resurrection and revival) went to press, Mac lost his battle with cancer,” Gary wrote. “He died on January 5, 2024 at 3:25 p.m. and was buried on January 23. Like any family who experiences a loss like this, we are heartbroken and have been handling it the best we can. As parents, it is very difficult to lose a child. My heart goes out to everyone who has suffered a similar loss and to anyone who has lost a loved one. We have all experienced it in some way. … I feel very blessed, lucky and proud to be his father.”
Mac was diagnosed with chordoma in August 2018, just two months after Gary’s wife Moira was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. After months of treatment, the Forrest Gump The actor said Moira went into remission and has been cancer-free since, but even after several surgeries, her son’s cancer continued to spread.
“This began a long battle that made him more and more incapacitated as time went on,” Gary wrote. “The fight against cancer was becoming more difficult, but for most of 2019 he was still able to come to the GSF (Gary Sinise Foundation) office, until a third spine surgery in November of that year.”
Mac had a passion for music from a young age and learned to play the drums at the age of 9. He later graduated from USC’s Thornton School of Music, where he studied composition and composition. He also played piano and harmonica, and occasionally served as a drummer in Gary’s band, the Lt. Dan Band.

Mac ended up working on an original composition, “Arctic Circles,” with the help of fellow musicians Dan Myers, Ben Lewis, Oliver Schnee and Bill Schnee, as well as playing harmonica on a recording of “Shenandoah.”
The collaboration eventually expanded into a full album titled Resurrection and revival, which had as its “theme of bringing back life to something that was old or unfinished.” The album also featured members of the Lt. Dan Band.
“He gave a lot to his family and friends during his 33 years, and accomplished great things in those final months,” Gary Sinise added in his tribute. “Thanks Mac. You did it. Resurrection and revival will live And you will too. In our hearts forever. We were lucky to have you in our lives as a son, brother and friend… and we will miss you and love you for eternity.
