TAMPA – While a collective fan base held its breath, Gerrit Cole “felt pretty good” leaving his meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles earlier this week.

The Yankees ace was diagnosed with nerve inflammation and edema in his elbow, which will prevent him from pitching for three to four weeks before attempting to recover, but considering the possible alternatives, he seemed optimistic about his prognosis.

“I think we’ve determined that we got too hot too fast in the spring,” Cole said Saturday at Steinbrenner Field in his first comments since undergoing a series of tests on his throwing elbow. “We moved through the normal recovery cycle, but at one point we didn’t get back to our baseline, which was kind of our goal. At that point, it was time to see what was going on.”

If Cole is able to begin his throwing program without any problems in three or four weeks, he will likely still need the full preparation of spring training, which lasts six weeks, leaving the door open for a late May return in the Best of cases. script.

Cole indicated he was “absolutely” confident he will pitch again this season.

The 33-year-old, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, said he will not receive any PRP injections in his elbow and will opt to “just rest and recover” for the next three to four weeks.

“We’re going to keep the arm alive, though,” Cole said, referring to plyometrics and arm movements. “It’s not that we’re not doing anything. “That was the term the doctors described: You’ll keep your arm alive for the next three or four weeks and then you’ll go to work.”

This will be the first time Cole will be on the disabled list with any type of arm injury.

He said he felt great during the offseason and had never experienced anything like this before.

“I mean, it’s not a common experience for me,” he said. “I’ve never really faced anything like this before. Every time you go through something for the first time, there is a bit of uncertainty. But I had a lot of faith.”
