‘Ghostbusters’ actor Ernie Hudson says he only pocketed $370 of his first ‘big’ Hollywood paycheck

Nearly five decades ago, Ernie Hudson first made his entrance into Hollywood.

Of the veteran actor’s countless film and television appearances, one of his best-known roles is that of Winston Zeddemore in the “Ghostbusters” franchise. According IMDb, the first installment of The “Ghostbusters” films alone grossed more than $297 million worldwide. What’s more, among the latest installments, “Ghostbusters II” grossed more than $215 million and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” grossed more than $204 million, all starring Hudson.

Before being part of blockbusters, Hudson experienced his fair share of receiving low wages. During the promotion of “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” of 2024, revealed told The Root what he earned on his first big payday as Hollywood actor.

“(My) first big check was $10,000 for a day of work,” Hudson shared in the interview. “I was behind on my rent and I told the landlord I was waiting for the check to arrive.”

However, Hudson didn’t know how much of his check would be distributed among his team.

“The check came and went to my agent, my manager and then my business manager,” he recalled. “And then I paid my publicist and got $370 out of the $10,000 check. I didn’t do much with it. “It wasn’t even enough to pay the rent.”

During the same interview, Hudson was asked whether or not he would object to there being a digital recreation of his likeness in the next 40 years. to the rhythm of how technology is moving, he says he thinks he’s not going anywhere anytime soon, not even in the entertainment industry.

“If I’m dead, of course. Use a digital (recreation) of my face. And if I’m alive but look dead, use a digital (recreation),” Hudson said jokingly.

He continued: “Technology has changed a lot. They keep changing my phone, and just when I get used to something I don’t know how to use things. Technology moves very quickly and whether we like it or not, I think that’s probably going to be the future. And I’m sure I’ll continue acting long after I’m gone.”
