Google halts Gemini AI image generator over 'historical inaccuracies'

Google has temporarily prevented its Gemini AI chatbot from generating images of people. This comes a day after the tech giant apologized for “inaccuracies” in historical representations the chatbot was creating.

After Google launched its revamped Gemini in some parts of the world on February 8, some users earlier this week posted screenshots on social media showing what the chatbot looked like. Inaccurately depicting white-dominated scenes with racially diverse characters..

For example, the Gemini AI chatbot depicted Nazi-era troops as people of diverse ethnic backgrounds.

The results generated by the tool sparked criticism and questions about whether the company was overcorrecting for the risk of racial bias in its AI model.

What did Google say about the controversy?

Shortly after the controversy, Google posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “We are already working to fix recent issues with the Gemini imaging feature. While we do this, we are pausing the generation of people images and will soon re-release an improved version.”

Earlier on Thursday, Google said the team was aware that Gemini offered inaccuracies in some historical imaging renderings.

He added: “We are working to improve these types of representations immediately. Gemini’s AI imaging generates a wide range of personas. And that’s generally a good thing because people all over the world use it. But it misses the mark.”

What is Google Gemini AI?

Gemini, formerly known as the Bard chatbot, is the latest addition to an ever-growing field of artificial intelligence.

It is a family of large multimodal language models designed for language, audio, code, and video understanding.

Powered by the Image 2 model, the Gemini AI chatbot allows users to generate high-quality images with text prompts.

Google officially launched Gemini AI last year on December 6. Because it integrates natural language processing and image recognition, Gemini enables tasks such as image captioning and complex visual analysis. No external OCR tools required.
