The Governor’s Office is speaking out after what it calls “politically motivated disproportionate attention” to the recent measles outbreak in Florida compared to 16 other states facing the disease this year.
“Once again, Florida has demonstrated that good public health policy includes personal responsibility and parental rights,” the Governor said. Ron De Santis. “While the national medical establishment and the media have lost the public’s trust, Florida continues to restore sanity and reason to public health, and always will do so under my leadership.”
“It is important that public health leaders consider all available data and make decisions that promote health while respecting people’s rights,” said State Surgeon General Dr. Jose Ladapo. “Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, I will always serve with integrity and prioritize a holistic approach to public health that tunes into the needs of Floridians and ignores the noise.”
The celebratory quotes are just part of a broader email in which the state claims vindication in the face of protests by politically motivated critics.
“The national health medical establishment and the media lost the public’s trust with their failed response to COVID-19. On the contrary, Florida under the leadership of Governor Ron De Santis has set the standard for public health with evidence-based leadership,” states a Florida Department of Health press release recirculated by the Governor’s Office.
The statement is a response to the controversy over how the Surgeon General’s office Jose Ladapo handled a measles outbreak in February at Manatee Bay Elementary School.
Ladapo offered guidance suggesting that community immunity meant that people with measles could make their own decisions about attending school, given that “people with a history of previous infection or vaccination with the full series of measles, mumps, and and rubella (MMR) are 98% protected and are unlikely to contract measles.”
“Due to the high probability of infection, it is normally recommended that children remain at home until the end of the infectious period, which is currently March 7, 2024. As epidemiological research progresses, this date could change. However, due to the high rate of immunity in the community, as well as the burden on families and the educational cost of healthy children missing school, the DOH is leaving it up to parents or guardians to make decisions about school attendance,” Ladapo wrote last month.
Now that 21 days have passed, there have been no additional cases, and in the event of another “sporadic outbreak,” Florida will treat it the same.
