Xavier University student arrested, accused of hit-and-run that killed beloved musician

The New Orleans music community is mourning a beloved Grammy Award-winning musician who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run earlier this week. A second line-up was held Wednesday night in honor of Kerry “Fat Man” Hunter. Another took place Thursday at Hunter’s Field. His band members with Kinfolk Brass Band and Hunter’s wife spoke with WDSU’s Shay O’Connor about his impact on the community. Hunter was part of Kinfolk Brass Band, Preservation Hall Brass and Nightcrawlers. The New Orleans Police Department says the hit-and-run occurred at North Claiborne and Pauger streets on Monday night before Mardi Gras morning. NOPD said Jeremy Lindsey, 21, was arrested in connection with Tuesday’s incident. Lindsey is a student and basketball player at Xavier University. WDSU reached out to Xavier for a statement and received the following response from a university spokesperson: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic event that occurred over the Mardi Gras holiday and which reportedly involved one of our students who were not involved in no Xavier University activity at that time. We mourn the loss of life. Our hearts go out to the family and friends who loved Mr. Hunter. We have no other comment as, as noted, this incident was unrelated with no university activities”. Lindsey faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run driving. Sources tell WDSU that Lindsey may have been drinking at the time of the crash. At this time, Lindsey is not facing any DWI charges. The Orleans Parish Coroner confirmed that the preliminary cause of Hunter’s death was blunt force injuries. The coroner’s report places Hunter’s place of death on the Claiborne Avenue/Interstate 10 on-ramp, which is more than two blocks from where he was hit.
