Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow? Will it predict an early spring or six more weeks of winter?
Our annual questions will soon be answered as we broadcast live coverage of Groundhog Day 2024 early Friday morning, when Punxsutawney Phil makes his prediction from Gobbler’s Knob in western Pennsylvania.

While there is nothing remotely scientific or accurate about Groundhog Day weather prediction, it is a long-standing tradition that always generates national attention every February 2nd.
While hope for an early spring seems to be the main excitement behind Groundhog Day celebrations, it turns out Punxsutawney Phil has only made that prediction (without seeing his shadow) less than two dozen times.
So how many times has Punxsutawney Phil seen his shadow? How many times have you predicted the beginning of spring? Here are the numbers as announced by the “Inner Circle” of Groundhog Day…
- Saw shadow: 109 times (including 2023)
- No shadow: 20 times
- No record of what happened: 10 times
The last time Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow was in 2019 and 2020, offering a back-to-back dose of his rare early spring prediction.
