As Mumbai Indians prepare for their opening match of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, a new leadership structure has been put in place, with Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as captain. Although it would take a few games to see how the new structure works for the five-time champions, but for the franchise’s middle-order batsman Tilak Varma, not much has changed since Hardik took the reins. The left-hander explained that both Hardik and Rohit are always available for other players in the team.

In the press conference ahead of MI’s opening match against the Gujarat Titans, Tilak faced quite a few questions regarding the captaincy change scenario in the team. He had only good things to say about Hardik, the leader.

“Rohit has been there for us and Hardik bhai has also been there for us. It has been the same, just following the basics. Strategy wise, everything is going well. It is the same, nothing new,” Varma said.

Tilak also made his India debut under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy and is now heading into the IPL 2024 season with the all-rounder as skipper. While Hardik is the designated captain of the team, Tilak explained that Rohit is there for both the captain and others when they need his opinion.

“I debuted with him (Hardik) when he was playing for India, so everything is going well. Hardik is the captain, Rohit is always there for Hardik and the team. We gel well as a team,” he added.

Tilak also spoke about his own role in the team and said that having made his debut for India, he now has a greater responsibility on his shoulders.

“Last year was a good season but now, as a senior player and having played for India, I have a bit more responsibility to play mature innings. As I said earlier, I always want to finish games and I have good knowledge.” and the experience when I was playing for India, so I’m looking forward to using it now,” he stated.
