"Have you heard of Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting?": England star criticized for Yashasvi Jaiswal's strange comment

Former Australian cricket team captain Michael Clarke has criticized England batsman Ben Duckett for his comments on Indian youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal. Following Jaiswal’s double ton in India’s victory over England in the third Test match in Rajkot, Duckett commented that England’s Bazball approach has encouraged other cricketers from other teams to play an aggressive brand of cricket. Clarke was not pleased with the comment and during a discussion on ESPN Australia’s Around The Wicket, he recalled the likes of Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting to point out that the aggressive style of batting predates Bazball.

“He must have missed Australia for 20 years,” Clarke said. “When I was young, I must not have known what Australian Test cricket was played. Have you heard of Matthew Hayden, Michael Slater, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, Adam Gilchrist? “These guys used to hit him as good as anyone.”

“Just because you play a reverse sweep or a changeup shot or a ramp shot, that doesn’t mean you’re batting aggressively either. Matthew Hayden just walked down the wicket and hit you straight on the head for a six. He didn’t have to play a ramp or a changeup shot,” he added.

Earlier, Duckett’s statement drew a lot of criticism from former cricketers.

“He looks like a superstar in the making, unfortunately he’s in pretty good shape at the moment,” Duckett said.

“When you see opposition players playing like that, it almost seems like we should take credit that they are playing differently to how other people play Test cricket. “We saw it a bit in the summer and it’s very exciting to see other players and other teams also playing that aggressive style of cricket.”
