Hayes, Kevin Costner’s son, makes his acting debut in ‘Horizon: An American Saga’

Two decades after his last directorial effort, Kevin Costner has a new movie on the horizon and he’s bringing his son with him.


The first trailer of Horizon: An American Saga debuted on Monday, and images from the upcoming Western epic offer glimpses of the Dancing with Wolves The director’s son, Hayes Costner, 15, makes his on-screen acting debut.


In the trailer, Hayes’ character defies her mother’s (Sienna Miller) wishes while her home is under attack. After her mother urges him to join her in the basement to hide from the invaders, the young man says, “It’s okay. I’m going to be with dad,” closing the basement door as a fire burns behind him.



The elder Costner, 69, clarified that he and his son play the same main character in the film. “Hayes plays the eponymous character that I play in the film. He is 13 years old and the script has been around for longer,” said the actor and filmmaker. he told PEOPLE. She also joked that she chose his son to have a good time with. “I did it on purpose, so he could be with me,” she said. “I’m like any other parent, I’m trying to think, ‘This is really cool. You should come be with me.'”


Other actors featured in the trailer include Luke Wilson, Danny Huston, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Rooker and Sam Worthington, star of Avatar (sometimes called “Dancing with Wolves in space”). Some of the trailer’s most memorable images show women breathing through the barrel of a shotgun while hiding underground, horse-drawn wagons crossing the prairie, and Costner shooting up a tent full of enemies with a stir.

Horizon: An American Saga marks Costner’s fourth directorial project, following the 1990s Dancing with Wolves1997 The postmanand 2003 Open range.
