Following Paramore’s first two Grammy wins, Democratic Tennessee state Rep. Justin Jones proposed a resolution to honor the group led by Hayley Williams along with first-time Grammy winner Allison Russell.
However, while the state House of Representatives unanimously passed Paramore’s resolution, House Republican Caucus Chairman Jeremy Faison objected to Russell’s resolution and returned it to committee.

“That the TN Republican Party blocked it, I take it as a compliment,” Russell added. “Unfortunately, their intolerance manifests itself relentlessly. We have the opportunity this year to make real change in TN #loverising #rainbowcoalition #register #vote #rise.”
Russell has frequently opposed anti-LGBTQ legislation passed by the state, including organizing the Love Rising Star Benefit Last Year in protest against state laws restricting drag shows.
Following the news, Paramore said in an instagram story that the band “will not accept any recognition or honor from the TN House until Allison Russell receives the same recognition.” Then on Friday Williams shared an additional statement via The Tennesseeexpressing support for Russell.
The singer wrote: “For those who don’t know, Allison Russell is an incredibly talented musician and songwriter. Her music spans genres with strong ties to the folk and Americana scenes. You may have seen her on stage at the Grammys performing with the great Joni Mitchell. Oh, she’s black too. She is a brilliant black woman.”
He continued: “The blatant racism of our state leadership is shameful and cruel. “Myself, as well as Paramore, will continue to encourage young people to vote with equality in mind.”
