ABC will count again Abbott Elementary as its Wednesday night centerpiece in 2024-25, but will begin the season without supporting comedies.
The Emmy-winning series will be delayed by half an hour to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, with The golden bachelorette party (which will last 90 minutes each week, compared to one hour for The golden bachelor last fall) as an introduction. The rest of ABC’s 2024-25 comedy offerings, including the final season of the conners – will arrive in the second half of the season.
“We remain very dedicated to comedy. I think you’ll see that really come to fruition midway through the season,” said Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich. The Hollywood Reporter in an interview Tuesday, a few hours before Disney’s upfront presentation. “Due to the strikes (in 2023), there was a pause in some of our development plans. We are now filming two very high-profile comedy pilots with beloved television talent: Tim Allen (Shift gears) and Ty Burrell (Forgive and forget). And I think one of the biggest television events of the year will be the final season of the conners. So I think that among those pilots, Abbottand the conners“You’ll see us really return to the brand of comedy that ABC is known for.”
ABC will also premiere a pair of dramas in the fall: High potentiala crime procedural starring Kaitlin Olson (which was held over from last year’s development cycle), and the film produced by Ryan Murphy. Doctor Odyssey, starring Joshua Jackson as the doctor aboard a luxury cruise ship. High Potential will follow Dancing With the Stars on Tuesday nights, while Doctor Odyssey will fall between 911 (also from Murphy) and Grey’s Anatomy on Thursdays.
The latter series will enter its 22nd season in the fall, adding to its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama in American television history. It is not yet known to what extent title star Ellen Pompeo will be involved. grey next season; Sources say those talks are still happening.
ABC’s other new show for the fall is escamanda, a docuseries produced by ABC News, based on a podcast of the same name, about a woman whose story of battling lymphoma was too good to be true. Will follow Abbott Elementary on Wednesday nights.
Dramas Will Trent and The noob are scheduled for midseason, along with new seasons of unscripted shows The Bachelor, Celebrity Jeopardy!, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and What would you do?plus a reboot Extreme Makeover – Home Edition. Erwich said THR that maintaining the two dramas will allow them to have practically uninterrupted careers starting in early 2025.
“Both shows are firing on all cylinders, both in terms of ratings and the performance we see on Hulu,” Erwich said. “We will launch them in January, when we have huge promotional platforms in rocking new year’s eve, as well as college football and a variety of holiday programming. That these programs continue uninterrupted seemed the best way to continue growing them, which is our goal.” Both Will Trent and The noob It will likely have around 18 episodes next season.
ABC will also present some Monday night football games in the fall, although not every week as was the case in 2023 (the full NFL schedule will be released Thursday). On off weeks, Erwich said, ABC will present a mix of specials, episodes of its game shows and repeat dramas.
