Hillary Clinton offers support to ‘Barbie’ director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie after his snub at the Oscars.
On Tuesday, the hit movie earned a total of eight Academy Award nominationsincluding best picture, but Robbie was not nominated for best actress, and Greta Gerwig it didn’t make the cut in the best director category.
The decision to leave out the director and star of last year’s most popular film has been widely criticized online, with the former Secretary of State and presidential candidate also weighing in.
“Greta and Margot. While it may hurt to win at the box office but not take home the gold, their millions of fans love them.” Clinton posted on X Wednesday morning. “They are both much more than Kenough. #HillaryBarbie“

“Barbie” grossed more than $1.4 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023.
Robbie’s co-star Ryan Gosling earned a best supporting actor nomination for his portrayal of Ken, and America Ferrera She also received a nomination for best supporting actress.
The two actors shared Clinton’s feelings in statements celebrating their nominations.
“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my peers alongside such notable artists in a year of so many great films,” Gosling said in a statement. “And I never thought I’d say this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s to play a plastic doll named Ken. But there’s no Ken without Barbie, and there’s no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot.” Robbie, the two people most responsible for this historic and globally celebrated film.”
Ferrera said she was “surprised” and “moved” by her Oscar nomination. She echoed Gosling’s statement: counting variety that she was “incredibly disappointed” that Robbie and Gerwig did not receive Oscar nominations.
On Wednesday, Gosling’s long-time partner, actress Eva Mendes, spoke instagram to celebrate her nomination despite initial criticism of her casting before the film’s release.
“I’m so proud of my man,” Mendes captioned screenshots of several negative articles. “So much hate when he took on this role. So many people trying to shame him for doing it. Despite all the #Notmyken ridiculed and articles written about him, he created this completely original, hilarious, heartbreaking and now iconic character and took him all the way to the Oscars.”
“I’m beyond proud to be Ken’s Barbie,” she added.
