18 Best Magic Systems In RPGs, Ranked
Casting magic in games is always fun, but some games nail it more than others. Here are the best casting mechanics in RPGs.
Rather than just whipping out a staff and attacking, you will first need to obtain staff charges. In this guide, we are going to go over how you can obtain and use staff charges. These are a one-time use item, so once a spell is cast, you will need to get more charges.
Enshrouded is currently in Early Access on Steam and as such, the content is subject to change. We will update these articles as required.
How To Get A Staff
Prior to casting spells, you will need a staff. Shortly into the game, you will acquire the recipe for the level-one ranged staff. This will require just one bone and two resin. At this point, you will probably not have any charges available, but that’s okay; we will go over how to get staff charges later.
When you unlock the Alchemist, you will gain access to the Spiritual Cane recipe, which requires the following materials.
- 3x Shroud Wood
- 4x Bonemeal
- 2x Resin
What Are Staff Charges?
Staff charges are your spells. Each spell has a different charge that will be depleted after using it. For example, if you have ten Ice Bolt charges, using your staff to do an attack will leave you with nine.
If you are carrying more than one staff charge, you can right-click to equip the charge of your choice. With the charge equipped, your staff will use the associated spell. While casting, you can also scroll to choose between charge options.
How To Get More Staff Charges
Fortunately, staff charges are pretty simple to obtain. You can craft them at the Alchemist NPC, with the Ice Bolt being unlocked right after placing him in your base. This is an ice magic spell that deals 26 damage and requires the following materials.
- 2x Water
- 5x Shroud Liquid
As you obtain more resources in the world, you will unlock more spell options. For example, above is the staff charge for Fireball II. This unlocks once you find Amber for the first time, and deals a whopping 85 damage.
Looting Staff Charges
Staff Charges can also be looted from around Embervale. For example, Heal Channel can be found within chests and crates. We found a lot of Heal Channels in the southwest portion of the map. As the name suggests, these are staff charges that provide healing, making it great to have on hand if you are traveling with others.
Mana And Spells
To use your spell charges and cast spells, you will need Mana. This is your magical power, and can be seen in the upper left-hand corner of your screen (in the blue bar). By going to your Character menu and clicking on “All Attributes…”, you will be able to see the exact amount of Mana that you have.
Every staff charge requires a certain amount of Mana to be used. For example, Ice Bolt requires 26 while Heal Channel only costs seven Mana.
Are your spells taking too long to cast? We suggest putting some skill points into Quick Charge. This is a node between the Wizard and Trickster branches that reduces your staff charge-up time by 50 percent.
How To Increase Mana
Mana can be increased in a few different ways. The best way to permanently increase your Mana is to invest in Spirit-boosting nodes on the skill tree. On the Wizard branch of the tree, you can see the first node that increases your Spirit by one; this equates to 20 Mana.
Clothing and armor can also affect the amount of Mana that you have. While exploring, you can loot rings that boost Mana, as well as craft armor sets that provide additional Mana. For example, the Alchemist Apprentice Chest piece will boost your Mana by 24.
Other pieces, such as the Mage Chest (in the Mage set) will boost your Mana by 48. Not every piece boosts your Mana; if you are looking to maximize your Mana reserves, you can mix and match between different sets.
Lastly, you can use Mana potions to regain any lost Mana. This is not permanent, but it’s helpful if you are low on Mana and need to quickly cast a spell. These potions are purple in appearance and will disappear once you consume them.
