spring training The games officially begin on Thursday with the San Diego Padres hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers in Cactus League action, a preview of the opening regular-season series in Seoul, South Korea, scheduled for March 20-21.
The Dodgers gained all the headlines this offseason by signing Shohei Ohtani ($700 million) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto ($325 million) after winning the NL West for the 10th time in 11 seasons.
Ohtani will not play in Thursday’s opener, still recovering from last season’s surgery, but has said he expects to have around 50 at-bats during spring training.
San Diego had a disappointing season in 2023 (82-80) and failed to return to the playoffs after reaching the National League Championship Series in 2022. This winter, the Padres traded future free agent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees and they are without reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell, who remains unsigned.
