At the Berlin Film Festival press conference for her new film “Love Lies Bleeding,” Kristen Stewart said she believes the era of queer films is “just something that’s done,” adding that it’s time for films focus on “marginalized perspectives.” and at the same time “not focus exclusively on the reasons why they are marginalized.”

“Love Lies Bleeding” stars Stewart as Lou, a lonely gym manager, who “falls madly in love with Jackie (Katy O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder who heads to Las Vegas in pursuit of her dream,” it says. the synopsis of the film. “But her love ignites violence, dragging them deep into the web of Lou’s crime family.”

When asked if filming the gory, twist-filled “Love Lies Bleeding” had changed his perspective on how queer stories are centered in film, Stewart trash-talked the topic.

“I don’t think we can keep doing that thing of telling everyone how to feel and patting ourselves on the back and taking points for giving space to marginalized voices, and only in the capacity of them being allowed to speak on Just That,” Stewart said. “We’ve all been there the whole time. I think the era when queer films were so intentional that they just got made is over. Maybe they still happen, but I think it’s inherent to the way we all move forward.”

In 2020, Stewart starred in “Happiest Season,” which was the first lesbian Christmas romantic comedy produced by a major Hollywood studio. Although Stewart said she enjoyed that experience, she now looks for queer stories where the narrative goes deeper than the character’s sexuality.

“I was happy to do ‘Happiest Season’ because it was an old gay era, it was a Christmas movie, it was a completely commercial, direct, simple, popcorn kind of stuff with hidden vegetables that we’re never really allowed to have,” he said. . “And I did it once, and now I really like the idea of unearthing marginalized perspectives and not focusing exclusively on the reasons why they are marginalized, but on their actual experience. What they love, what their desires are, where they come from, where they want to go. And then not feeling like you always have to stand on a fucking platform and be everyone’s spokesperson.”

During the press conference, Stewart also provided an update on her upcoming Susan Sontag biopic, which was announced at last year’s Berlinale, where she served as jury president.

“The Sontag thing will take place over a very long period of time,” he said. “The format is unique. It is a hybrid documentary, a research project, an experiment, a film within a film-type thing. We started last year here at the festival. I don’t know when we’re going to finish it. “It is an open process.”

Directed by Rose Glass, “Love Lies Bleeding” also stars Ed Harris, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov and Dave Franco. The film will have its international premiere in Berlin on Sunday night as part of its Special Gala section and is scheduled for theatrical release on March 8 on A24.
