If Cowboys could keep just 1 UFA?

Given that it’s starting to sound more and more like the Cowboys are quiet at the start of free agency, I’m no longer sure they’ll sign any other players. But what about our own boys? I’m curious if you could pick just one free agent to stay on the team, who would it be? – David Trotter / Springfield, MO

Kyle Youmans: It’s difficult to limit the entire list of free agents to one name, mainly because they come from positions of need. To simplify, my answer comes from the greatest need in my opinion: stopping the race. Jonathan Hankins helped accomplish that as the only true space-eater in the Cowboys’ front seven last year, and they certainly missed his presence on the defensive line when he was out for four games late in the year. If there was only one name to re-sign, he’s the one for me.

Nick Harris: In addressing what needs to be done this offseason, Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones have said stopping the run is one of the key goals. While the absence of Johnathan Hankins was part of the problem in December of last season, having him on the field provides a substantial difference in preventing opposing running backs from breaking through the middle of the defensive line. Bringing him back could provide consistency at the position, and drafting a defensive tackle and linebacker to help Hankins stop the run could allow everyone to see the full potential of what Hankins can bring to this defense.

Patrick Walker: I could (and have) made a strong case for rehiring guys like Dorance Armstrong, Jourdan Lewis and Johnathan Hankins, and I vehemently support them. That being said, if there is only ONE I can keep, I will have to sign to keep Stephon Gilmore and for a variety of reasons. He effectively helped DaRon Bland save the season when Trevon Diggs suffered a torn ACL, and given that Diggs will need time to regain his best form upon returning from that injury, and Lewis could leave, and depth is already an issue at CB. I’m making sure Gilmore doesn’t leave the building.

Nick Eatman: This is like going to a restaurant that has 8-9 great things and you’re supposed to pick one? At first, I’d say Hankins because this team already had problems against the run and the Cowboys seem to play better when he’s there. And I can make a case for some guys, but give me Tyron Smith. For me, I still think Tyron is a really good player when he’s healthy and maybe they found a way to keep him relatively healthy for most of the season. He played 14 games last year and with him out there, you’re better inside with Tyler Smith at guard and you have more depth. I think I can cover other positions, but I’d stick with Tyron if he was just a position.
