Given that Girona drew with Real Sociedad yesterday, a victory today in the Madrid derby could double the money for Los Blancos fans. However, they would have to do it without Vinícius Júnior, who suffered a knock in the warm-up and was replaced by Brahim Díaz. The rest of the field remained largely unchanged, with Eduardo Camavinga taking his place in midfield. Joselu Mato was on the bench despite scoring two goals in the last game, and he was joined by, among others, Arda Güler. Castilla’s reserves would take the field as usual for both teams. Nacho Fernández wore the armband in the derby.

Jude Bellingham got things going with great pace, but Jan Oblak won the first battle. Brahim Díaz tried it then but suffered the same fate. Atlético then saw their first opportunity arrive through Álvaro Morata but Andriy Lunin made a magnificent save. It was the home team that scored first, as Brahim Díaz crossed the area with the ball before scoring the first goal. Lunin would then make the best save of the game to deny Axel Witsel, and they would miss a decent chance from the resulting corner. Saúl Ñíguez would win some aerial duels and came close, but couldn’t get it right. Rodrygo Goes and Fede Valverde would close the half with decent chances, but the score would remain 1-0 at halftime.

The controversy began already in the second half, when the visitors scored a goal from Stefan Savić from a corner kick. The goal was disallowed by VAR when it was seen that Saúl was right in the path of Andriy Lunin, being both offside and an illegal distraction for the goalkeeper. The half was marred by penalty appeals, all of which were dismissed by the referee. Some correctly and a couple a little more iffy. Brahim produced another magical moment just before being substituted, playing with the Atlético defense before straying too far from goal. Antoine Griezmann got behind the defense and sent the ball towards the goal with a clever move, but Lunin was again on hand to make a good save and keep his team ahead. Los Blancos would lose that lead one minute from the end of added time, when Marcos Llorente headed over Lunin to save a point for the visitors. Full time, 1-1. Opinions on the game?
