Star opener Shubman Gill shared words of encouragement from head coach Rahul Dravid after leading India to a 5-wicket win against England at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi on Monday, February 26. Two young Indian batsmen, Gill and Dhruv Jurel, joined hands on Monday as India outclassed England’s Bazball to hand the tourists a 3-1 series defeat on Day 4 of the fourth Test in Ranchi.

Gill took to Instagram to post about India’s emphatic victory and what was special about the post was the caption he wrote. The motivational words used by Gill in his caption were said by none other than Dravid himself.

“If not you, then who? If not now, when?” – Rahul Dravid,” Gill’s caption read.

DID GILL PAY DRAVID’S FAITH?

Dravid’s words of inspiration seem to have contributed to the determination Shubman Gill showed while batting in the fourth innings while remaining unbeaten at 52 and helped. India chase 192 runs from a complicated and nervous position in a field that was doing some tricks. It was Gill’s second consecutive major contribution in India’s final innings as the young opener seems to have found his groove at No.3, a position in which he had struggled in the recent past.

Gill had not scored even a fifty in his first 12 innings at number 3. However, the 24-year-old responded to the criticism with his third Test hundred during the second Test match against England in Vizag. His brave knock guided India to a 106-run victory in the match.

Gill continued to gain confidence after his hundred as played a knock of 91 runs in the second innings of the third Test at Rajkot. Continuing his second innings heroics for India, the batsman stepped up once again along with Dhruv Jurel to help India cross the line in Ranchi. Before the series, Dravid had shown confidence that Gill would do well in the series and the batsman delivered when the team needed him the most.

In the absence of star batsmen like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, Gill showed his class with the bat and his temperament to bat at the crucial number 3 spot. Gill managed to repay the faith that Dravid showed in him as he has scored 342 runs so far in the series in 4 games with an average of 48.66.
