Franchise-based cricket leagues have grown rapidly across the world since the first of its kind was introduced in 2008 through the successful Indian Premier League (IPL). 16 years later, the nation is ready to welcome a new form of the game. The T10 format has been immensely appreciated in the Middle East and West Indies, but this month India will host the first league in the shortest format, but with a twist.
The new Indian Street Premier League, a T10 tournament played with tennis ball, began in all its glitter and glory on Wednesday in Thane. The league comprises six franchises owned by Indian film actors, with legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar named as the brand ambassador and former India head coach Ravi Shastri named as the tournament’s chief mentor.
