Kennedy Reid is ready to make her Hollywood dreams come true when American Idol kicks off season 7 Sunday at 8 pm on WHAS11.
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — A singer from New Albany, Indiana, is ready to show the world that she has what it takes to become the next american idol.
The seventh season of American Idol reminds all contestants that “home is where the dream begins, but Idol It’s where the dream takes off.”
The show will tap into more local talent this season.
That’s where 23-year-old Kennedy Reid comes in.
Reid is a local artist who also works as a funeral director and embalmer at Spring Valley Funeral Home.
The judges were baffled to learn of Reid’s career path, but also intrigued by her dazzling pink “coffin nails.”
“Coffin really has a deep meaning to you,” Perry said jokingly.
Reid auditioned alongside her pianist and friend Jean Ann in front of judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan giving her best rendition of the late rock icon Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High.”
Before receiving her review, Jean Ann explains that she and Reid met at the John Conlee concert.
The irony, Bryan shares, is that Conlee used to sing at funerals.
Jean starts playing Conlee’s “Rose Colored Glasses” as Bryan starts singing. Here, Reid offers a more relaxed singing style as she and Bryan begin to duet.
After that moment, they get to work.
“You have all the tools, it feels a little pompous,” Bryan said.
Richie felt like he sang the wrong song but it had the right elements. She said that she felt more relaxed singing Conlee’s song.
“You have a great voice, but I think you’re afraid of death?” Perry said. “I’m not sure you’re ready for it, but you’re the kind of character and person that I just want to throw you in there.”
The reception was mixed, but he eventually made it through the moment.
“Let’s give him a break from death and show him what life is all about. I’m going to give him a yes,” Perry said.
Yes, Reid is headed to Hollywood!

WHAS11’s Grace McKenna spoke one-on-one with Reid before his audition aired.
The primarily country singer said she draws inspiration from artists from all eras of the genre, from Dolly Parton to Jelly Roll. She feels that country music is really having a great moment right now.
Reid began her musical career in high school theater and singing in nursing homes. When people tune in to American Idol this season, she hopes they meet the local girl from Sellersburg.
“I’m just a small town girl, I’m totally out of my element right now, but I’m learning a lot and I’m so excited to share this experience with everyone. I’m just a down-to-earth person who loves music and wants to share my gift with the world,” he said.
Reid revealed that a friend of a friend sent her tape to the show and that she never imagined making it to the live auditions.
“Other than Tennessee and Florida, that’s the farthest I’ve traveled,” he said. “So Los Angeles was pretty far away for me, but it was absolutely amazing. I met some wonderful people along the way and I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity.”
His family and friends held a special party Sunday night where WHAS11 caught up with Reid following his audition broadcast.
“Actually, that was the first time I’d seen him since the audition,” she said. “I feel very blessed. Seeing it again makes me very excited and I feel honored to be able to celebrate this event.” [the Hollywood ticket] in my hand.”
