Adam Zampa pulled out of the IPL at short notice due to personal reasons.

Zampa had been signed by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the December auction in Dubai with a contract worth Rs 1.5 million (approximately AU$273,000), but his manager confirmed to ESPNcricinfo on Thursday that he will not participate in IPL 2024.

He has a young family at home and has had a busy schedule recently, playing in the BBL and Australia’s white-ball series against India, the West Indies and New Zealand since the end of last year’s ODI World Cup in India.

The Royals have two of India’s best spinners in their team – R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal – but Zampa still made six appearances in the 2023 season. He took eight wickets at 23.50 with an economy rate of 8.54, including figures of 3 of 22 in a home win over Chennai Super Kings.

Zampa has previously represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru (then Royal Challengere Bangalore) and the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL, taking 29 wickets in his 20 appearances in the tournament, spread over four different seasons.

The Royals also lost Prasidh Krishna from their bowling attack in recent weeks after he was ruled out for the season following quadriceps surgery. Prasidh’s injury prompted Royals co-owner Manoj Badale to suggest that the franchises could work more closely with the BCCI’s medical department this week.

“There are always areas where you would like to continue to push (the BCCI) forward,” Badale told the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast. “Clearly the medical aspect is really important, given how much these players are asked to play in different formats.

“We are again without Prasidh Krishna this season and that is difficult as a franchise, when you have bet 7-8% of your total spend on a particular player and then that player is not available for the entire tournament, that hurts you. “The medical side is an area we are trying to work a lot harder on.”

The Royals are yet to announce a replacement player for Prasidh or Zampa.
