Since the BCCI’s annual contract list was released on Wednesday, two names that have caught attention were Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan with their. The two star players have been part of India’s planning in recent times but still found themselves excluded from BCCI contracts. As per reports and suggestion by the BCCI in one of its press releases, the duo’s reluctance to play in domestic cricket may have played a major role in the loss of both BCCI central contracts.
While no official reason was given as to why Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were dropped, a line in the BCCI statement gives a strong hint. “The BCCI has recommended that all athletes give priority to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team,” the BCCI said.
When Ishan Kishan walked out of India’s tour of South Africa, the BCCI said on December 17: “Mr. Ishan Kishan has requested that the BCCI be released from the upcoming Test series against South Africa citing personal reasons. The wicketkeeper was subsequently withdrawn. of the test team.”
While Ishan Kishan was expected to play domestic cricket during his time away from the national team, the wicketkeeper-batsman decided to remain absent from his state team’s Ranji Trophy matches in Jharkhand. Even though the coach of the Indian cricket team, Rahul Dravid, clearly mentioned that he needed to play some form of cricket to regain his place in the Indian team, Ishan Kishan ignored the instruction.
Shreyas Iyer was also excused from one of the Ranji Trophy matches with Mumbai due to an injury. However, the NCA’s report on his injury was contradictory, according to a report in the Indian Express.
Now, in a report from ESPN Cricinfo, it has been claimed that Ishan Kishan was contacted by the management of the Indian cricket team during the ongoing India vs England test series. Reports added that Kishan replied that he was not ready yet. In his absence, Dhruv Jurel got the chance and won the Man of the Match award.
