Former Indian cricket team player Harbhajan Singh believes that the change in captaincy at Mumbai Indians would have come as a shock to Rohit Sharma. Hardik Pandya, who completed a sensational move from Gujarat Titans ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, was named captain, marking the end of a ten-year tenure for Rohit. While Harbhajan noted that he hopes the decision is for the “betterment” of MI in the future, the decision would have been quite sudden for Rohit.

“I hope it is for the betterment of Mumbai Indians in the future. You know, Rohit has been a true leader and a champion player for Mumbai Indians and also for India. Knowing him, after winning so many trophies for MI and having done so well at the international level, it must have been a shock for him not to be part of the leadership group all of a sudden,” Harbhajan said on the IPL Daily Show on Star Sports.

“I’m sure he will be involved in one way or the other, but we have seen Rohit grow as a player and captain and win those five trophies. That says a lot about his captaincy. I don’t know; the management has taken the decision and I hope that everyone take it in the right spirit and Mumbai Indians play like a champion team,” added the former Indian cricket team player.

Harbhajan praised Hardik as captain and said proof of the all-rounder’s leadership skills comes from the fact that he led GT to the title in 2022.

“He is someone who loves challenges; he has done well in GT, winning the title the first year and runner-up the next. This shows that he is a leader; now he is very calm and works well. I feel he has all the qualities of a leader,” concluded the former Mumbai Indians player.
