James Gunn announced that February 29 marked the start of filming for his new film “Superman,” which will begin the reboot of the DC Universe under the supervision of him and his DC Studios co-head Peter Safran. Gunn also revealed that his movie, which was titled “Superman: Legacy,” is now simply called “Superman.”
“I’m thrilled to announce the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29th, which happens to be, coincidentally and unplanned, Superman’s birthday,” Gunn wrote in a caption of what appears to be a close-up of his version of the Superman costume.
“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the movie ‘Superman: Legacy.’ When I closed the final draft, it was clear that the title was SUPERMAN,” he added. “We’re headed your way in July 2025.”
David Corenswet, best known for supporting roles on Ryan Murphy shows like “Hollywood,” stars as the eponymous superhero alongside “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of infamous Superman villain Lex Luthor, while Gunn’s cast also includes Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillon (Guy Gardner), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl). ) and more.
Gunn posted the cast’s first photo on Instagram last week following a script reading in Atlanta. speaking to Variety At the SAG Awards, Brosnahan said it was exciting to hear Gunn’s words out loud.
“It was pretty surprising,” Brosnahan said of the table read. “Some of us met for the first time. Some of us were able to see each other again. It was amazing to hear the script out loud. As with all these movies, there are a lot of action sequences and things like that. So listening to the pace of the movie and hearing these characters occupied by the actors who play them is really fun. It’s also a great group. “You can’t ask for more than that when you do something like this.”
“I’ve always loved Lois Lane,” the actor added. “She is smart, ambitious and can be funny. She knows that she is the smartest person in the room most of the time. When the opportunity arose… I’m a big James Gunn fan from afar… we’re still finding these characters. We haven’t started shooting yet. You will know the final version of them.”
“Superman” will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025, from Warner Bros.
