Jay Leno has filed to be guardian of his wife’s estate amid a dementia diagnosis.
On Friday, Leno, 73, requested in a Los Angeles court filing to ensure that his wife Mavis Leno’s estate plan is properly executed because she “currently lacks the necessary capacity,” according to documents obtained by USA TODAY.
The hearing is scheduled for April 9.
“Unfortunately, Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation in space and time for several years,” according to the document.
Mavis, 77, “suffers from dementia, a significant neurocognitive disorder,” her doctor wrote in a medical capacity statement, which also described her deteriorating cognitive function.

The revelation of Mavis’ diagnosis comes more than a year after Leno suffered significant burns to his hands, face and chest when flames broke out while working on one of his vintage cars in November 2022. He underwent two procedures , including a surgical excision and graft. .
Months later, in January 2023, the television personality was injured in a motorcycle accident that left him with several broken bones.
The comedian’s introduction establishes his desire to manage Mavis’ half-share and assets in a trust, which would support her, her brother and Leno. The couple has no children and she has no other siblings.
The former “Tonight Show” host “has always managed the couple’s finances throughout the 43 years of their marriage, and will continue to do so until his passing,” the petition states, adding, “Jay is fully capable of continuing to support him.” for Mavis’ physical and financial needs as he has done throughout her marriage.”
Leno and Mavis met in the 1970s at the Comedy Store before marrying in 1980.
