TAMPA – JD Martínez will not begin the season with the Mets and will instead initially start with minor league at-bats, The Post has learned.

Martinez still had to undergo his physical before his long-delayed one-year, $12 million contract was completed.

But when it was finalized, the decision was that there wasn’t enough time for it to be ready for Thursday’s season opener against the Brewers at Citi Field.

Therefore, Martinez gave his consent in advance for a specific minor league season, likely 10 days, to take advantage of at-bats he lost by being unsigned for almost all of spring training.

Those at-bats can come in the expanded spring in Port St. Lucie or with a minor league team. The Triple-A season begins next Friday.
