While Jennifer may have seemed like the obvious choice to talk about her former co-star, it was actually Laura Dern who was originally intended to do the honors. However, he unfortunately had to drop out at the last minute due to illness, leaving Jennifer to save the day.
As I’m sure you know, Jen and Mark co-starred in the beloved 2004 romantic comedy. 13 going on 30which follows the story of a schoolgirl named Jenna who wakes up in her 30-year-old body after making an unusual birthday wish.
Jennifer plays the 30-year-old version of Jenna, who is now a top NY magazine editor – goes in search of her childhood friend Matty, played by Mark, who is a struggling photographer. And as the couple navigates their strange reality, they begin to fall in love.
So in her speech to Mark, 20 years after the iconic film’s release, Jen got right to the point.
“Why didn’t they ask me to do this in the first place? “I started the era of Mark Ruffalo romantic comedies,” she said, referring to the fact that the success of 13 going on 30 prompted him to get roles in other romantic comedies, such as Rumors say that with Jennifer Aniston and Just like paradise with Reese Witherspoon.
Paying tribute to Mark’s rom-com legacy, Jen proceeded to list several of his other on-screen love interests and wondered about her own experiences working alongside the actor.
“I wonder if my colleagues Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth (Paltrow), Keira Knightley… I wonder if they would agree that Mark owes the success of this romantic comedy to the unkempt hair, the cute loose button-down shirt, the which became the norm for pretty boys everywhere for the next 20 years,” he asked.
He also took the opportunity to poke fun at Mark’s anxious nature, revealing that his nerves almost led him to quit the show. 13 going on 30 In the last minute.
“I wonder if these dear ladies enjoyed Mark’s anxiety as much as I did?” she joked. “I wonder if he tried to abandon his movies like he did ours after the first ‘Thriller’ dance rehearsal, where Mark went from being a little surprised that we had to do this to being uneasy, to being dead silent now.” ‘Brother, this is not for me.’”
Jennifer is obviously referring to the iconic scene in 13 going on 30 where Matty reluctantly helps Jenna liven up her party by joining her on the dance floor to perform moves seen in the music video for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
And interestingly, this isn’t the first time Jennifer has called out her co-star over the dance number. In March 2021recalled the rehearsal process and revealed that Mark almost quit on the spot.
“We started learning the dance. Our first rehearsal, I think it was Mark, Judy (Greer) and I, and Judy and I were dancers growing up, and poor Mark didn’t know it,” she recalled. “And he came in and hated the rehearsal process so much that he almost quit.”
However, it seems like he’s since learned to love the scene, as he and Jennifer adorably teamed up to recreate the moves from “Thriller” while posing for photos at Thursday’s ceremony.
