Jimmy Kimmel made a Twitter joke about Trump’s Oscars despite being told not to

Immediately after hosting the 2024 Oscars, Jimmy Kimmel was interviewed backstage by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos for their annual “Live” post-Oscars special and gave his quick reactions to some of the ceremony’s liveliest moments. Kimmel’s last part as host was reading aloud Donald Trump’s criticism of the show, which Trump posted on Truth Social earlier that night.

“Has there EVER been a WORSE PRESENTER than Jimmy Kimmel at the Oscars?” Trump posted. “His opening was that of a below-average person trying too hard to be something he’s not, and can never be… Also, tonight is a really bad politically correct show, and for years: disjointed, boring and very unfair. Why don’t they give the Oscar to someone who deserves it? Maybe then its audience and television ratings will return from the depths. LET’S MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Kimmel responded to Trump live on stage by saying, “Blah, blah, blah… Okay, now, let’s see if you can guess which former president just posted that on Truth Social. Someone? No? Well, thank you, President Trump. Thanks for watching, I’m surprised you’re still… hasn’t your time in jail already passed?

Speaking to Ripa and Consuelos, Kimmel said some people advised him not to read Trump’s criticism of the Oscars aloud during the ceremony. He clearly didn’t listen to that advice.

“They said, ‘You have a little time,’ and I said, ‘I’m reading Trump’s tweet,’ and they said, ‘No, no, don’t read that.’ “Kimmel said laughing. “(I was like) ‘Yes, I am.’”

Kimmel added that he was “feeling pretty good” after the 2024 ceremony, which marked the fourth time he has hosted the Oscars. He also weighed in on the show’s final viral moment, in which Al Pacino awkwardly submitted best picture to “Oppenheimer.” Instead of reading the nominees, Pacino simply opened the envelope and said, “And my eyes see ‘Oppenheimer.'”

“I guess I’ve never seen an awards show before,” Kimmel said. “It seems like everyone in America knows the beat they’re supposed to follow… right down to ‘And the Oscar goes to…’ But not Al Pacino! God bless you.”

“Oppenheimer” dominated the Oscars with seven wins, including best picture, director for Christopher Nolan, actor for Cillian Murphy and supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. Kimmel joked that he would like to host the Oscars at least 20 times to beat the Bob Hope’s record.
