Jon Favreau knew Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow’s on-screen chemistry in Iron Man It was something special.
The director recently revealed to People magazine which incorporated some of the actors’ real-life conversations into the Marvel film. And it’s one of the reasons why the dynamic between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts seemed so authentic.
“I was a very good student and I would take notes while they were talking, and whether it was improvising or just talking about the scene, I would write down the things they said,” Favreau recalled.
In particular, he recalled one instance in which Paltrow corrected Downey Jr. “because we were reading the script and he was like, ‘This looks like Jackson Pollock’s Spring Season.’ And then he corrected us in the rehearsal. She says, ‘No, it’s actually The Springs era.’ The Springs is the part of the Hamptons where Jackson Pollock lived and worked, not the spring or the season.’”
Favreau continued: “So I wrote down every word and she corrects it in the movie when she says ‘the spring period.’ So she just adds to the snappy kind of banter of hers. I find it completely convincing and entertaining to see the two of them together on screen because they had these jokes that have a special touch.”
2008 Iron Man The film not only helped launch the multibillion-dollar Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also cemented Downey Jr.’s place in Hollywood. He and Paltrow reprized their roles in additional independent films. Iron Man films and other Marvel projects before his final appearances as Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, respectively, in 2019. Favreau added that “they complement each other very well. They are very different, but still have a lot of respect and admiration for each other. I love that”.
