The family photo might have helped ease concerns and questions about Kate, Princess of Wales, but then viewers noticed irregularities in the image and a flood of new questions arose. And now the princess has acknowledged that the photo she posted on Sunday was manipulated.

“Like many amateur photographers, I experiment with montage from time to time,” says the princess. he said on social media on Monday. “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion caused by the family photo we shared yesterday.”

The recognition of the manipulated photo came after several news agencies retracted the photo. The Associated Press, for example, noted the strange “alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand with the sleeve of her sweater” and stated, “Upon closer inspection, it appears the source has manipulated the image.”

The photo was posted on Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom and shows Kate (Princess Catherine) sitting in a chair, sharing a hug with her children: Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and Prince George. In the post, Kate credited her husband, Prince William, for taking the photo.

“Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the past two months,” Kate wrote.

At first glance, the cheerful image seemed to suggest that the princess was healthy and happy after she virtually disappeared from public view in late December. Kensington Palace had shared few details about Kate, 42, saying that after undergoing “successful” abdominal surgery in January, she spent almost two weeks in hospital.

But then the questions arose, which went from rumor to total retraction. In its analysis of the photograph, AP noted that its photographic standards prohibit substantial editing of an image, as well as the removal of “red-eye” effects.
