Kate Snow, the NBC News veteran who has anchored the network’s Sunday broadcast “NBC Nightly News” since 2015, plans to step down next week, she revealed to the show’s viewers Sunday night, citing increasing responsibilities related to streaming content.
The move may be a sign that its presence is needed elsewhere. Snow, who is also a senior national correspondent for NBC News, has co-anchored since September 2022 portions of “NBC News Daily,” a set of daytime hours that air on NBC News Now and appear in daytime slots across NBC. affiliates. “Our audience at ‘NBC News Daily’ is growing rapidly and, after much thought, I have decided to focus my attention Monday through Friday on that role. So next Sunday will be my last Sunday hosting ‘Nightly News,’ Snow said. “I will miss the team not seen here behind the cameras, but I will continue to be part of the ‘Nightly News’ family, reporting and contributing.”
Others at NBC News have been sent to broadcasting from linear assignments in the recent past. Hallie Jackson gave up an hour-long show on MSNBC to devote more time to an afternoon show on NBC News Now, and executives suggested audience activity helped guide her actions.
The change opens up the Sunday night position, which can serve as a springboard to more visible assignments. NBC News declined to comment on Snow’s potential Sunday successors. The news division is expected to reveal those plans in the coming weeks. A rotation of hosts will be used on the Sunday broadcast of “NBC Nightly News” following Snow’s final broadcast next week. The network has a long list of potential candidates, including hosts like José Díaz Balart, who hosts the Saturday edition of “Nightly,” or Tom Llamas, who arrived at NBC News in 2021 with no small amount of speculation that he was seen as a possible successor for general “night” duties. Many others are likely to be considered.
Lester Holt hosts the weekday version of “NBC Nightly News” and has recently presided over the narrowing of the ratings gap between that program and ABC’s “World News Tonight.” ABC’s evening newscast has seen its audience among 25- to 54-year-olds – the audience most coveted by advertisers – drop more than 20% so far this season through Feb. 11, according to Nielsen data.
Snow initially joined NBC News in 2010 after working at ABC News, where she covered the White House, as well as CNN. During his tenure at NBC News, he has been highlighted by an exclusive 2018 interview on “Dateline” with Andrea Constand, who broke her 13-year silence about the case that led to Bill Cosby’s conviction. The report won an Emmy. He also directed a “Dateline” special that has 27 of the comedian’s accusers in a room, and which received an Emmy Award and a DuPont Award.
