Katy Perry announced Monday that she will be leaving “American Idol” after seven seasons.

“This fall, in September, I’m doing a big music festival in Brazil called Rock in Rio… so I think this will probably be my last season for ‘Idol,’” Perry said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” before a stunned audience.

“I mean, I love ‘Idol’ so much,” he continued. “It has connected me to the heart of America, but I need to feel the pulse of my own heartbeat.”

The “Last Friday Night” singer, 39, appeared on the late-night show to promote the upcoming 22nd season of the singing competition series.

Perry joined the judging panel for the show’s 16th season in March 2018, when ABC revived it after years on Fox.

The “Never Really Over” singer has worked alongside fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie since signing.

When host Kimmel, 56, asked, “What did Luke and Lionel say” about their exit, Perry responded, “Well, they’ll find out tonight!”

The “Never Really Over” singer also shared that she will be participating in the Rock in Rio music festival in Brazil this fall. disney

Perry’s career on “Idol” has not been without controversy. The pop star actually took a hiatus from the show last year after a fan outcry over her harsh criticism of the contestants.

She was initially criticized for joking that contestant Sara Beth Liebe had been “laying on the table too much” upon learning that the young singer already had three children.

She suggested that co-judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan would find out about her departure by watching the late night show. ABC

“It was embarrassing to have that on TV and it was painful,” Liebe, who eventually left “Idol” to care for her children, said in a TikTok video after her viral episode aired in early 2023.

“I think women supporting and encouraging other women is great and I think mom-shaming is really dumb and I think it’s hard enough being a mom and being a woman.”

The “I Kissed a Girl” singer was also booed for criticizing another competitor’s brilliant costume.

Perry came under fire several times during her tenure on “Idol,” as viewers found she was “bullying” contestants. ABC

While Perry did not address the trouble he frequently found himself in, Judge Bryan came to his defense.

“Katy gets made fun of for going out and trying to have fun doing a TV show,” Bryan, 47, said at the Country Music Association Fest in June 2023.

“You can’t be so safe at the moment when you’re so homogenized, that you can never joke or have a fun time.”
