The reason Killer Mike was led away in handcuffs after winning three Grammy Awards on Sunday is coming to light. A senior police source says Rolling Stone that a security guard working the star-studded event claims the rapper injured her during a confrontation inside the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
It was shortly after the Atlanta musician, whose legal name is Michael Render, swept the rap category with trophies for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance that he reportedly encountered the guard near his assigned entry, the source revealed. The guard told police she asked Render for the tickets and directed him to a security checkpoint, but he allegedly refused. According to the woman, Render tried to go around her, and when she “ran and got in front of him again,” he allegedly “pushed her to the ground,” the source said.
The guard allegedly suffered an injury to her hand and fingers, the well-placed LAPD source said. The woman called for help and her fellow security officers surrounded Render outside the arena and called the police, the source said. The guard received medical treatment, signed a citizen’s arrest for misdemeanor assault and had photographs taken of his alleged injuries, the source said. The rendering was then arrested and transported for bookingprocessing and release under your own responsibility.
The source was aware of critics who have questioned why Render was arrested while Will Smith was allowed to remain at the 2022 Oscars after punching Chris Rock in the face. “There is a big difference,” the source said. “Chris Rock didn’t want to make a report, he didn’t want to make an arrest. He was a fellow artist and I guess they figured it out themselves. “If Chris Rock had said, ‘I want to make a citizen’s arrest,’ it would have been an honor.” The source said that in this case, she “was a private citizen and had everything necessary to exercise her right to make a citizen’s arrest. And we are required by law to make that arrest.”
Neither Render’s attorney nor a representative responded to multiple requests for comment. The artist, however, appeared on an Atlanta radio show Monday morning and jovially deflected questions about the incident, describing his arrest as a minor detour in an otherwise celebratory night. “We hit a roadblock and then we go back to the party,” he told the Big Tigger Morning Show. He said that he would only then leave his final party after winning Best Rap Album for Miguel and Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Scientists & Engineers.”
“I want to thank everyone who dares to believe that art can change the world,” Render said in his Grammy acceptance speech for Best Rap Performance on Sunday. “It is our responsibility to continue using our imagination to shape and shape the world.”
Render was honored for his solo achievement on Sunday, but was previously nominated for a Grammy for “Chase Me,” a Run the Jewels collaboration with Danger Mouse and Big Boi. In 2003, he won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance for the Outkast collaboration “The Whole World.”
Beyond music, Render is also known for his work as an activist. He grew up in a family of community organizers and his father worked as a police officer. In the days after the murder of George Floyd in 2020, he gave a moving speech alongside the mayor of Atlanta that became a defining moment in the widespread protests that erupted.
“I saw a white officer murder a black man. And I know it tore your heart, and I know it’s paralyzing,” he said of Floyd’s death at the hands of white former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. He said he woke up “angry as hell” and “wanting to watch the world burn,” but urged protesters to preserve their own neighborhoods.
“We have to be better than this moment. We have to be better than burning our own houses. Because if we lose Atlanta, what else do we have? “We lose the ability to properly plot, plan, strategize, organize and mobilize,” he stated.
