In its Rolling Stone March CoverKirsten Stewart drips with sweat-soaked sex appeal, and she does it for her own gaze, not anyone else’s view of gender or sexuality.
“I want to do the most fucking gay thing you’ve ever seen in your life,” the “Twilight” alum said Wednesday about the coverwhich shows a mullet-clad Stewart sporting a leather vest and jockstrap ensemble.
The cover photoshoot is an ode to her upcoming ’80s queer thriller, “Love Lies Bleeding,” which debuted in This year’s Sundance Film Festival and will be released by A24 in March, and his queer identity.
Stewart’s gender nonconformist streak began to emerge in her portrayal of brooding heroine Bella Swan in the “Twilight” saga, which the actor said in a January interview with Variety He had a “very gothic and gay leaning.”
Now it’s going at full speed.
“If I could grow a little mustache, if I could leave a happy trail and unbutton my pants, I would,” he told Rolling Stone contributing editor Alex Morris for your cover story. “Guys, I’m sorry, but you constantly shove your pubic in my face and I’m like, ‘Ummmm, bring it on.’”
In the comments below Rolling Stone instagram post As for the cover story, some are asking Stewart to “show some class.” Others praised what Morris called Stewart’s “hypersexualized, left-andro” statement.
“A queer person who pushes boundaries and makes cis-hets uncomfortable… I LOVE watching it,” one Instagram user wrote.
In her cover story, Stewart said she considers herself “very fluid” in her gender and sexual identity, a fluidity that manifests itself in outtakes from the cover shoot that show the actor matching tank tops and pointelle briefs.
“I look at these kids who are so creepy on all those fronts, and they can make (gender) like an accessory, they can really play with the novelty of it: having (femininity) one day, not having it the next.” Stewart said. “I’m very aware of these things.”
It’s just one of the ways he perceives the generational gaps between queer people. Another, she said, is the mainstream media’s growing acceptance of artists whose queerness infuses her work.
“It says: Jodie (Foster), me, Boygenius. I’m in the middle,” she said. “Jodie went through some very difficult times and I’m not speaking for her; I’m objectively looking at the time and place she was in, and that’s not easy.”
“For me it wasn’t a problem,” he added. “But that’s probably because of the kind of space I inhabit and the parts that I’m drawn to and the filmmakers that are drawn to me and the audience that exists for those films.”
Such is the case of “Love Lies Bleeding,” in which Stewart takes on the role of Lou, a gym manager, who falls in love with bisexual bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O’Brien).
Stewart said Lou is an unconventional protagonist.
“It was really fun that they let me play the little sister as the main character,” she said, saying that playing Lou was like going back to a blank slate.
“It’s a really strange and moving return to form in some ways. Kind of like who you are when you’re 11 (physically, the clothes you choose to wear) before male expectations hit you.”
