The film is receiving good word of mouth and high praise from the industry as a whole. Notably, Aamir Khan is one of the producers of “Laapataa Ladies”, which marks Kiran Rao’s directorial venture. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, Pratibha Ranta aka Jaya from ‘Laapataa Ladies’ shared her thoughts on the phenomenal response she is receiving from the audience, how she relates her character to herself, the best compliment she has she received and other Bollywood. movies she admires and much more. Excerpts from the interview:

How does the success of the film treat you?
It’s so overwhelming. It’s absolutely nice because such good reviews are coming in. I think this seems unreal. But yeah, I’m really enjoying every part of it.

So far, what is the best compliment you have received?
People can really identify with my character. Many girls come, send me messages and tell me that you just told our story. We really relate to this. So I think that’s the biggest compliment I feel. My work has reached people and people can identify with it. It is something very important for an artist.

How did you get ‘Laapata Ladies’? I auditioned for it. When I received the scripts, I realized that they were very good. After reading three scripts, I was so excited that I wanted to read the entire movie. I identified a lot with those three scripts. The audition was like it was made for me. They called me to meet because they wanted to test me again. When I went to the office, I was excited and nervous. Everything was exciting. When I left the audition room, I was satisfied. I felt like I had done my job. After that, whatever happens, I’ll leave it to the universe. I received a call saying I had been selected for the position. It was a fun experience.

Were there moments during the filming of emotional scenes when you experienced intense or subdued emotions? Low and high emotions don’t happen. She knew from the beginning what scenes we were going to do. One night before I was going to a specific area. I thought this scene is funny. It will be filmed from different angles. And there will be many takes. Surprisingly, great monologues end in a couple of takes. It becomes magical and easy. At first, you get scared before doing each scene. But when you get on set, it becomes organic.

You talked about the monologue. Can you shed some light on that? When I auditioned, I read that scene first. Jaya tells us in that scene who she is, what she is doing and what goal she should pursue. That same incident happened to me. I was in Shimla. I told my family, “Look, I want to act. Don’t make me a doctor or an engineer. Give me a chance.” I used the word “opportunity” at home. There’s a line in the movie. If we steal, let’s steal life’s opportunity for us. That’s my favorite line. I really want people to see the movie. Some movies are important. This movie is important. You learn a lot. The day I saw this film in front of the audience, I realized that I am part of a masterpiece.
