Elon Musk’s drug use worried his business partners and company board members so much that they asked him to go to rehab and even take a break from work to “dry off” various substances, including them LSD, cocaine, ecstasy and ketamine, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal.
Musk’s close friend, former Tesla boss Larry Ellison, also a billionaire co-founder of Oracle, He even urged Musk to travel to Hawaii during the winter of 2022 to “relax from work and dry off drugs“the outlet reported, citing people familiar with the offer.
Ellison’s proposal came amid growing concern among Musk’s friends and associates that Musk’s drug use was getting worse, according to The Journal.
At a party in the Hollywood Hills at the time of Ellison’s offer, a person who attended the event said Musk drank ecstasy in “liquid form” from a water bottle after his personal security cleared the floor for privacy, he continued. The report.
The Journal reported that the “volume” of Musk’s drug use has contributed to a culture of peer pressure among Musk’s friends and the heads of his various companies, which created an “expectation” in them to use drugs along with him to maintain the social status acquired by being close to the billionaire.
Musk, Ellison and their lawyers, Alex Spiro and Christopher Muzzi, did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s requests for comment.
Musk, who is reportedly one of several executives in Silicon Valley who has tried his hand at psychedelics such as ketamine, has also used LSD, cocaine, ecstasy and magic mushrooms, according to an extensive report by The Journal.
Despite proclaiming that he doesn’t “like doing illegal drugs,” Musk’s drug use has already put him and his companies on alert.
After smoking marijuana on a Joe Rogan podcast episode, NASA made SpaceX commit in writing that the company was following federal guidelines on drug use in the workplace. The company spent $5 million of taxpayer money to properly train its employees on the rules, the Journal reported.
The billionaire also shared on X that he has a prescription for ketamine, which recent research shows can be used to treat depression.
Experts previously told Business Insider that the combination of hard drugs Musk used carries several health risks, especially at his age of 52.
These include irregular heartbeats, incontinence, and psychosis if the user has bipolar disorder, which CNBC reported that Musk once suggested he had done so to his Twitter followers in 2017.
