During Friday’s fourth-quarter earnings call, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy” will begin filming next week.
Gunn published the firstt image of the entire cast on Instagram yesterday, writing: “After the table, read with the cast of #Superman. Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, producer Peter Safran, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, me, Guy and The Engineer, all together for the first time! What a beautiful day.”
Zaslav sounded optimistic when breaking the “Superman” news, saying, “Simply put, the studio has really underperformed, even at the end of the year, where we had some real struggles, but we’re very optimistic about this year, and “It has given us the opportunity to have many advantages in the next two years.”
Gunnar Wiedenfels, chief financial officer of Warner Bros. Discovery, was also candid on the call about last year’s soft-core superhero offerings.
“As far as film goes, obviously this will continue to be a success-driven business,” he said. “Last year was a great example, with the biggest success in movie studio history and some real industry-wide challenges on the superhero side.”
Wiedenfels also specifically noted that two of the company’s December productions, “The Color Purple” and the superhero sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” didn’t do well.
“Superman: Legacy” stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and will be released on July 11, 2025. Gunn is writing and directing the film, which will be released on July 11. July 2025. the first in the “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” section of the rebooted DC Universe, which he created alongside producer Peter Safran. Starting in 2022, the duo will be co-CEO and co-president of DC Studios.
