Artificial intelligence has already changed the way we work, so it makes sense that AI would also change the devices we work with. For example, the Lenovo ThinkBook laptop with transparent display reconsiders the traditional cover and turns it into a more collaborative device for working in a world of AI-generated content.

The proof-of-concept laptop appeared at MWC 2024 and features a 17.3-inch micro-LED transparent display that lets you see what’s on the other side of the screen. The design allows for the overlay of virtual creations in the real world, essentially becoming a transparent whiteboard. The effect would be similar to how Apple’s Vision Pro mixed reality headset You can place virtual objects in your real environment. (Transparency would also prevent someone from surprising you by appearing from behind the screen… if that’s a thing that happens.)
Instead of a physical keyboard, there is another glass panel that is used for typing or drawing.
Micro-LED displays generally offer stunning colors and contrasts, and brightness that rivals OLED displays; The ThinkBook’s display was dazzlingly bright, capable of reaching a brightness of 1000 nits. If there were concerns about being able to use this in any environment, indoors or outdoors, the transparency of the screen should not be an issue. Privacy also appears to be an issue, but in the future transmittance will be adjustable to provide more privacy or more transparency for interacting with real-world objects, Lenovo said in its announcement.

Another key element of the design is the keyboard, or lack thereof. Instead of physical keys, the concept laptop has a touchscreen keyboard. More importantly, the digital keyboard can be converted into a drawing board for use with a compatible stylus.
This year we were captivated at CES by LG’s transparent OLED TV and Samsung’s transparent micro-LED displays, and it’s exciting to see how this technology goes beyond giant commercial screens or super expensive TVs. Obviously, a design like this isn’t for everyone, but it could be the future for creatives who want to see, and want others to see, their digital creations come to life in the real world in real time.
