Several people have weighed in on the topic of superhero fatigue as of late, especially as the genre has stumbled upon a number of flops lately, even from those that have achieved guaranteed hits in the past.

Some have dismissed the concept not so much because of fatigue with the genre itself, but rather because of bland or poor filmmaking. We’re seeing that demonstrated at the box office this weekend with the “Spider-Man” spinoff “Madame Web,” which landed to dismal reviews and underperforming box office expectations.

That hasn’t stopped mega-producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the director of the “Transformers” and “GI Joe” franchises who produced “Madame Web,” from weighing in on the subject in a recent interview. Talking with Discuss the movie to promote the project yesterday, says:

“I think two things have been happening, both with Marvel (the MCU) and with DC. First of all, I think those types of superhero movies have suffered a little bit because they’ve moved away from what made the first Iron Man or Christopher Nolan’s Batman successful to begin with. Those were really character-driven movies.

Then when you start getting into these bigger movies where you’re trying to connect all the worlds, you’re actually moving away from the emotional journey of the central characters.

So for me, part of the fatigue is that you have to stay on top of everything now. You know, it’s almost like homework. With Madame Web, you don’t need to know anything before starting the movie. You will meet a new character and then go on an emotional journey with them.

That brings me to my second point: Many recent superhero movies have also strayed away from what really works: having extraordinary characters, which is meeting them and then traveling together.

That makes it more character-based and therefore engaging; It’s not just about the show. Believe me, if you’ve seen any of my movies, I love spectacle. But when spectacle itself starts to wear down a movie, I think there’s a lesson to be learned.”

Whether he has taken his own lesson to heart is another story. “Madame Web” currently has 13% (3.4/10) from 172 critics reviews and only 54% with audiences in rotten tomatoes – worse than “Morbius” (15% critics/71% audience) and the second worst Marvel adaptation in recent years, only behind the short-lived TV series “Inhumans” (11%/43%).

The news comes as Johnson tells it Magic FM He actually hasn’t seen the movie yet because he tends to avoid watching his own movies, adding that “not watching my movies is like self-care.”
