After all, Manchester United’s mini-renaissance appears to have been built on sand, as it only took a couple of injuries for Erik ten Hag’s side to suffer their first defeat of 2024, going down 2-1 at home to a Fulham team that had not won away since the first day of the season.
Without the in-form Rasmus Hojlund and the reliable Luke Shaw, United got off to a flat start and failed to score in the first half for the first time in eight games. Diogo Dalot hit the post, but Fulham looked more dangerous: Alex Iwobi missed twice and Rodrigo Muniz hit the post.
Fulham deservedly took the lead early in the second half thanks to a powerful shot from Calvin Bassey, and United had only half-chances to score until Harry Maguire stabbed home from close range in the 89th minute. With nine minutes added and Bruno Fernandes cheering on the crowd, Fulham were prepared for an attack.
But it was the Londoners who had the last laugh, Iwobi having the third chance and slotting into the bottom corner after United were too slow to stop a visiting counter-attack.
Ten Hag’s side are now eight points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa and could be six points behind fifth-placed Tottenham if Spurs win their remaining game, giving them a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the Champions League.
