Whoopi Goldberg shares her opinion on Barbie’s Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were snubbed from nominations for best leading actress and best director at the Academy Awards, respectively.
The EGOT winner said on Wednesday’s episode of The view, “Here’s the deal: not everyone wins,” before adding, “These aren’t snubs. And that’s what I want to point out.”
“It is not the elites, it is the entire Academy family that votes for the best picture nominations. “We all vote for the best picture, everyone,” she said of the 10 nominations for the best picture category. “You don’t get everything you want.”
Barbie Fans, as well as some Hollywood stars, have been taking to social media since Tuesday morning, sharing their disappointment that Robbie and Gerwig were left out of those two categories, even though the film earned a nomination for best film. Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera also earned nominations for best actor and supporting actress, respectively.
Gosling also issued a statement after his nomination saying he was “honored” by his nod but “disappointed” by Gerwig and Robbie’s snubs, adding: “There is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two most responsible for this historic and globally celebrated film.”
before during The view In the conversation, panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin praised the actor for his comments before asking: “Did they (the Academy) miss the whole moral of the story of Barbie? Of course, we celebrate only Ken, not the woman who is the protagonist and the icon.”
But co-host Sara Haines chimed in with a different take, asking, “When does it become a snub?”
“I know the movie, I know the greatness and the money, but that assumes that no one else should be there because you have five people (nominated), everyone below those five is kind of a snub,” he added. “There will always be a snubbed category of the greats.”
Goldberg, who previously won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in the 1990s. Ghost, said: “There are no snubs, and that’s what you have to keep in mind: not everyone gets an award. … The movies you love may not be loved by the people who vote.”
