Something quite terrifying has disrupted Apex Legends’ North American Finals, and players are now potentially starting to worry about their own accounts and the overall security of the game.
Respawn and EA postponed the North American finals due to the game’s “competitive integrity” being compromised. What is not clear is the extent of the violation. There is some concern that this isn’t just about upsetting the pros in the finals, but rather a larger security issue across the game that could affect a broader player base. Some creators are complaining on social networks that they have scanned their PCs and are finding viruses, although there is so much panic that there is no evidence that it has to do with this hack. But if hacking could affect a professional match, it would seem to be something that could violate normal players, even if he’s not actually doing it right now. Many believe this is the work of a hacker, Destroyer2009, who has previously been hacking professionals, and that it was a remote RCE exploit using his PC, but none of that has been confirmed.
It’s hard to understate how unprecedented something like this is for a major esports event. A final event that was suspended because someone violated the game to give tricks to players It’s just something that doesn’t happen.
