Miley Cyrus omits Billy Ray Cyrus from Grammy acceptance speeches

Miley Cyrus won two Grammy Awards on Sunday night, but there was one person left out of her acceptance speeches: her father and “Hannah Montana” co-star Billy Ray Cyrus.

Miley Cyrus won her first two Grammy Awards at the Feb. 4 ceremony, more than 15 years after she began releasing music.

She first took home the award for best pop solo performance for “Flowers,” from her eighth album, “Endless Summer Vacation.” Later that night, she also won record of the year for her hit “Flowers.”

Miley Cyrus, who came into the Feb. 4 ceremony with six total nominations, has received eight Grammy nominations throughout her career. But before 2024, she had never won, alongside Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry.

While accepting her first award, Miley Cyrus took her win in stride and joked that she was stuck in traffic and thought she would miss the ceremony.

“I might have missed the award, okay, but not Mariah Carey,” he said, referring to the award presenter.

Miley Cyrus noted that she was sitting on her “lucky number three” at the ceremony before sharing a story that “sums up this moment.”

His story began with a boy who desperately wanted a butterfly. His parents gave him a butterfly net, but he still couldn’t catch the coveted insect.

“With no luck, it sat on the ground, finally let go and gave up. And it was okay because I wasn’t going to capture this beautiful butterfly,” he shared. “And just when she did, that’s when the butterfly came and landed right on the tip of her nose.”

“This song, ‘Flowers,’ is my butterfly,” he said in conclusion before proudly holding the golden statuette.

In her second speech after winning record of the year, she danced with fellow nominee Billie Ellish on the way to the stage to accept her award.

“This award is incredible but I really hope it doesn’t change anything because yesterday my life was beautiful,” he began his speech. “Not everyone in the world will get a Grammy, but everyone in this world is spectacular, so don’t think this is important.”

He went on to thank his collaborators and team, as well as his “main gays because look how good I look!”

Miley Cyrus also thanked her mother, Tish, her sister and her boyfriend, but notably left her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, out of her speech.

“To all the people we love. I don’t think I’ve forgotten anyone,” he concluded. “But I may have forgotten the underwear. Bye!”

(Later he would follow with a instagram post noticing that he had underwear on: PS: I was just joking…. She was wearing matching custom @gucci panties. “)

But fans were more concerned because the “Flowers” singer left her father out of her speech.

“I just realized this was Billy Ray Shade…” @wtfdolk posted along with a video of the speech.

Fans have speculated that the alleged family breakup is due to Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus calling it quits and filing for divorce in April 2022. They have both since remarried: Tish Cyrus (now Cyrus-Purcell) tied the knot with Dominic Purcell in April 2023 and Billy Ray Cyrus married Australian singer Firerose in October 2023.

On February 5, the day after the Grammys, Miley Cyrus posted on Instagram thanking his fans and family members, but his father was not yet among those on the list.

“To my mom @tishcyruspurcell I love you more than anything in the entire universe, my family, @brandicyrus thank you for being there as always, my godmother @dollyparton — I felt your fairy dust everywhere (I put a little more in my hair , could you say it?!),” the title read in part.

At the Grammys, Miley Cyrus walked the red carpet in a different outfit than the one she wore to accept her awards: a sheer bronze ensemble that highlighted the golden tones of her voluminous hair.

Fans connected her hair to her godmother Dolly Parton’s, and the custom gold she gave Maison Margiela Jane Fonda in “Barbarella.”
