Sarfaraz Khan’s brother Musheer Khan, player of the match in the Ranji Trophy final, does not have an IPL contract. But like his brother, who recently made her Test debut against England and performed well, Musheer is not disappointed at all. He wants to emulate his brother and achieve success for India at the Test level.

Musheer, 19, said an IPL contract will eventually come, but he is now concentrating on doing the basics well.

“My name is not in the IPL. But I don’t feel disappointed. My father tells me to play Test cricket and play for the Indian team. The IPL will eventually take place, if not today, then tomorrow,” he said Musheer to PTI remembering the words of his father and training coach Naushad.

“It’s good to have another year to prepare for the IPL. I will understand T20 cricket better and how I should prepare for this format,” Musheer said.

The right-hander, who is also a skilled left-arm spinner, would not have returned to first-class cricket after two seasons if senior batsman Shreyas Iyer had not withdrawn from the quarter-finals citing a back injury. Playing his first Ranji Trophy match since 2022 and also in the quarter-finals, Musheer made the most of the big stage. He converted his first century into two hundreds when Mumbai were in a tough situation.

Musheer followed up that knock with a half-century against Tamil Nadu in the semi-final. In the final against Vidarbha, he scored 136 in the second innings, helping Mumbai set a massive target of 538. He eventually helped Mumbai clinch their 42nd Ranji Trophy title, extending their record.

‘Really inspired by my brother Sarfaraz’: Musheer

Musheer understandably took inspiration from his elder brother Sarfaraz, who made his India debut in the third Test against England in Rajkot last month. “My brother inspires me a lot because of his dedication and the way he bats. Our batting style is similar.” “He told me before the match (Ranji final) to consider it a normal match and that he should not put too much pressure on me.”

“From the outside it may look like a normal game, but on the field we felt pressure. He told me to support my abilities and follow the process,” he added. Musheer, who was also the leading run-scorer in the ICC Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, including two hundreds, was quite happy after Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy triumph after a gap of eight years.

“It is a matter of pride to have accumulated 42 titles. Many great players have played here (for Mumbai). I feel very proud to have played for Mumbai and won a championship.” I also want to thank the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and congratulate them as they have given us a lot of support. I hope they continue to support us in the same way,” he stated.
