Nicholas Hoult shares information about his preparations to play Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s next film. Superman.
The actor passed by Inside You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast to chat about his acting career, including the long-awaited film, which began production last week, according to the director.
Recalling his time auditioning for the classic villain, Hoult said Gunn has the “ability to keep things fun and lively and try things in the moment and just yell from the monitors: ‘Say this line. Do this! Do that!’ And that’s something I really enjoy. … That’s the whole preparation process for me, it’s like being as prepared as possible so that when you get there you can throw everything away and do whatever you want in the moment.”
As for the weeks prior to filming, the Renfield The actor also told the host that he started working out to play Lex.
“There is that part in stellar superman (comic series) where he talks about his muscles being real, hard work and all that,” Hoult said. “I kind of took it as a little fuel for the fire.” But he also noted that he doesn’t think the villain will have shirtless scenes in the movie.
At the beginning of the podcast, Hoult revealed to Rosenbaum, who played a younger version of Lex in smallvillethat his version of the villain was the first time he saw Lex on screen.
“The first Lex I saw was you. Yes, I grew up smallville was on”, the warm bodies said the actor. “That was the show I watched and I saw my first versions of Superman and Lex and all those stories. Since then I’ve seen Richard Donner’s movies and all the others and I’ve seen some of the other performances, but you’re like the one. … Is the best.”
In late February, Gunn shared a photo of the cast all together for the first time, noting that the image was taken after the first table read. Hoult appeared to sport a shaved head, preparing to play Lex.
Gunn’s Supermanalso starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, will be released on July 11, 2025.
