With just a week left until the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign begins, Royal Challengers Bangalore appear headed for a name change. In a video shared by the franchise on social media, the management appears to be getting closer to removing the word ‘Bangalore’ from the franchise’s name. In all likelihood, ‘Bangalore’ will be replaced by ‘Bengaluru’ in the franchise name, in sync with the new name of the city.

Since the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008, Royal Challengers Bangalore has remained the name of the franchise despite the city title changing from Bangalore to Bengaluru. It was in 2014 when the transformation from Bengaluru to Bengaluru took place. But that didn’t bring about a change for RCB.

However, ahead of the IPL 2024 season, RCB finally seems to be in the process of making the switch.

In their 16 years of participation in the IPL, the Royal Challengers have never won the league title. The name change could change the franchise’s fortunes a bit, but there’s no guarantee. Another IPL team, Punjab Kings, had changed its name (previously known as Kings XI Punjab), but that did not lead to any change in its destiny.

Even the Delhi Capitals, formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, changed their name but they too have not been able to win an IPL title yet.
