The campaign is over, voting is closed: As Hollywood’s biggest night approaches, nominees have little else to do but show up looking fabulous and wait to see who won what.

Unlike in recent years, in which the favorites have been little-seen independent films that the academy has chosen to highlight, this year box office giant Oppenheimer is in position in the polls to take home the most awards.

But if we know anything about him Oscar awards It can be a ceremony of surprises, so let’s take a look at the main categories and which nominees could be the ones to watch…

Best Supporting Actor

First out looks like a likely win for Oppenheimer Robert Downey Jr, who plays the man eager to take down the title character in the hit biopic. The Iron Man star has been giving big speeches during awards season, so voters will be eager to hear more from him; Plus, he has the comeback narrative so beloved of the industry, after a very public battle with drugs and even a prison sentence in the 1990s. He feels like this is his moment and even ryan gosling Ken hasn’t done enough to beat him, although I suspect the Barbie star might have been the favorite had Downey Jr not been in the fight this year.

Best Supporting Actress

Another person who has been winning all awards season is The Holdovers star Da’vine Joy Randolph, who seems certain to pick up the Oscar for her portrayal of a grieving mother in the comedy-drama about trapped staff and children. at a prestigious boarding school during the Christmas holidays. She may not be the most famous person on stage on Sunday, but she still oozes star power, and while there’s a lot of love for jodie foster and his supporting role in Nyad, this one seems safe.

best Actor

Cillian Murphy has already won a BAFTA and other awards for his performance in Oppenheimer. Photo: Universal Pictures

At one point this seemed to be a two horse race between Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer and Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, but Murphy’s recent wins at the BAFTA and SAG awards suggest the Peaky Blinders star will ultimately emerge victorious. However, I can’t help but hope that it’s Giamatti who ends up taking home the Oscar, especially since after the Golden Globes he was seen at a local burger joint holding his trophy. I like the idea that his Oscar could receive similar treatment. to go out to eat. Furthermore, Giamatti is one of those character actors who feels that ought If we already have an Oscar, maybe Academy voters will feel the same way?

Best actress

Emma Stone (pictured in Poor Things) is the favorite along with Killers Of The Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone to take home the award for best actress. Photo: Yorgos Lanthimos/Searchlight Pictures

Without a doubt, the most difficult of the acting careers to choose, the favorites for best actress are Lily Gladstone for Killers Of The Flower Moon and Emma Stone for the poor. Both have won other awards this awards season and both are undeniably brilliant in their roles. Gladstone already made history as the first Native American actress nominated for an Oscar, so a win for her would be a huge moment of progress, while Stone won before her, perhaps putting her at a disadvantage. I still think she could go either way.

best director

Zone Of Interest director Jonathan Glazer is one to watch in this category, but can he beat the mighty Christopher Nolan? Photo: A24

Christopher Nolan He has never won an Oscar. I know, it seems so unlikely that the team had to triple-check that this was definitely the case when this year’s nominations were announced. After this weekend, however, that statement will almost certainly no longer be true, as the Inception and Dark Knight filmmaker should finally get the flowers from him for Oppenheimer. If anyone were to cause discomfort, they’d look to fellow British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer, whose Zone of Interest is disturbingly impressive, but the push definitely goes to Nolan.

After his wins elsewhere, it seems likely that Oppenheimer will also take home the night’s big prize, and when he does he will have cemented himself as the rare beast of being both a box office and critical success. But the best thing about this year’s Oscars is that there are no real duds on the best picture shortlist, they are all worth seeing and also demonstrate that despite the various challenges it faces, the film industry is producing exciting work. and innovative, and that work is resonating. with moviegoers. A victory for both the filmmakers and the audience.
