Bhamakalapam 2, the sequel to the 2022-released web film ‘Bhamakalapam’, released today on the OTT platform Aha. Read our review to find out what the heist thriller is like.

History:

Due to her turbulent past, Anupama (Priyamani) vows to keep to herself. In partnership with her maid Shilpa (Sharanya Pradeep), she runs a restaurant and participates in the Cooking Idol 2023 competition organized by tycoon Antony Lobo (Anuj Gurwara), who has sinister intentions. When things turn dark, Anupama is forced by corrupt NCB officer Sadanand (Raghu Mukharjee) to steal the competition trophy. Why does Anupama have to help Sadanand? Why is Sadanand threatening her for the trophy? What is Antonio’s plan? What does Anupama ultimately do? The movie has all the answers.

Plus Points:

The story begins with some glimpses of the ending of Bhama Kalapam, but this time, the makers changed the genre from crime comedy to a heist thriller, which sparked more curiosity among the audience.

One of the highlights is Priyamani’s impressive performance in both the installments. In this latest installment, she plays a more confident and less innocent character, which is reflected in his performance.

Sharanya Pradeep also delivers a satisfying performance and brings in the humour. Raghu Mukherjee’s performance as the antagonist is also noteworthy, while the remaining cast members justify her roles effectively.

Bad points:

While the decision to continue the franchise with a heist drama is commendable, the script could have been executed better. Some scenes seem overly dramatic and certain plot developments are predictable, which diminishes the overall impact. Injecting more twists and turns could have improved the gripping narrative.

Sharanya Pradeep’s character could have been developed further to inject more humor into this serious heist thriller. Seerat Kapoor’s inclusion seems mainly for glamor and lacks substantial scope to act.

The pacing of the film takes time to build momentum and the climax seems less compelling. It seems to be a strategic decision by the creators to expand the franchise.

Technical aspects:

Abhimanyu Tadimeti’s direction is competent, but more attention to detail could have improved audience engagement, particularly in the first half. Prasanth R Vihari’s background score lacks impact and fails to raise the suspense. However, Deepak Yaragera’s cinematography captures the richness of the images very well, backed by commendable production values. The editing in the first hour could have been tighter.

Verdict:

Overall, Bhamakalapam 2 offers entertainment in some parts. Priyamani’s admirable performance and Sharanya Pradeep’s contributions are the positive aspects of the film. However, the film suffers from predictability and pacing issues. If you enjoyed Bhama Kalapam, you may find its sequel intriguing, but manage your expectations accordingly.
